Abstract
Fetuin-A has been demonstrated to play an important role in free fatty acid induced insulin resistance in the liver. Increased fetuin-A in patients with pre-diabetes is associated with increased progression to diabetes and decreased reversal to normoglycemia. Fetuin-A has been considered to play a crucial role in the protection from vascular calcification by solubilizing calcium and phosphorus in serum. The study was planned in Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences on 25 urolithiasis and 25 normal patients. Twenty-four-hour urine and serum fetuin-A levels were measured in both study groups using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. The data from the present study suggest that the serum fetuin in patients with stone disease was lower than in individuals without stones. Hence the present study concludes that the Serum and urine fetuin evaluation may be included in the metabolic profile of stone formers.
