Abstract
Liver disease that occurs during pregnancy can
present a challenge for healthcare providers. In this article are presented the the most important
pregnancy related liver diseases: cholestasis of pregnancy, preeclampsia
induced liver disfunction and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, eclampsia
(including HELLP – hemolisys, elevated
liver enzymes, low platelet count) and acute hepatic steatosis which are
completely reversible after delivery. Intrahepatic (obstetric) cholestasis of
pregnancy (ICP) is a reversible type of of hormonally influenced cholestasis
and poses a risk of complications for both the mother and the baby. HELLP
syndrome is a type of
preeclampsia and has similar symptoms characterized by the presence of hemolysis,
increased liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia. Acute hepatic steatosis in
pregnant women is presented by abnormality in fetal fatty acid metabolism. Because of the need to consider both maternal
and fetal health, there are special considerations for the implementation of
diagnostic strategies and pharmacologic therapies for liver disease that occurs
in pregnancy.
